Description:
This artwork stands as a testament to the beauty, power, and resilience of women around the world. “Mother of Exiles” is a line from a poem written for the Statue of Liberty. In my depiction Lady Liberty is a Black woman, freeing herself from the bondages of exploitation. Here is an image of freedom which is hard to look at for it requires us to come to terms with a truth we deny: we still are not free… not yet, but in this image there is an undying hope that can inspire all of us to keep rising. -ZAH
